Located on the North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands, Kill Devil Hills is a popular family vacation destination with a celebrated history. Though nearby Kitty Hawk is regularly cited as the location of the Wilbur and Orville Wright's first flight in 1903, the flights occurred in Kill Devil Hills. The town's unusual name dates back to Colonial times when rum-carrying ships ran aground just offshore and locals would scavenge the cargo and hide it in the sand dunes. It was said the rum was strong enough to 'kill the devil.'The Wright Brothers National Memorial is a popular attraction.
