Destination Highlights

The province of Colon is northwest to the city of Panama. Colon is a port in the Caribbean, and is the base of the largest free trade zone of the Western Hemisphere. One of the main attractions of the province is the artificial Lake Gatun, a unique ecosystem and part of the Panama Canal. You can also find the historic town of Portobelo, the ruins of Spanish forts and churches that can be visited. Gatun Lake is an artificial lake that is an important part of the Panama Canal, carrying ships 33 km across the Isthmus of Panama. At the time of its creation, Gatun Lake was the largest artificial lake in the world. Around the lake there are several resorts that offer boat rides, as well as excursions to the islands and the Embera Indians.
